La Malagueta: donde la elegancia convive con el bullicio

La Malagueta: Where elegance meets the busy crowds

La Malagueta, one of Malaga's wealthiest neighbourhoods, is also the preferred spot for tourists, expats, and locals who want to enjoy some time on the sand, without having to move away from the city centre

Getting lost in La Malagueta's streets, beyond the beach side, gives us an opportunity to admire its eclectic architecture, find some shade and enjoy a walk in this elegant part of town.

What to see in La Malagueta

Malagueta beach: lots of life by the sea

La Playa de la Malagueta is a bustling hub of activity, where you can spot beachgoers every day of the year. Whether you'd like to take a dip in the refreshing –aka cold!– Mediterranean waters, indulge in a variety of water sports or simply take a sunrise walk on the sand, La Malagueta has something for everyone.

This lively atmosphere extends to the promenade, lined with seafood restaurants –chiringuitos–, ice cream parlours, and shops. This promenade is usually filled with bikers, runners, and people walking their dogs or on their way to Pedregalejo or El Palo.

La Malagueta is not quiet, we must warn you! Depending on the time of the year, you will most like find large groups of people listening to music, playing beach volleyball and street vendors shouting the names of the cold drinks they are offering. If you are looking for a more natural enclave, away from traffic and buildings, we recommend exploring other areas of province, like Nerja, only a 40 min drive away.

Muelle Uno: a Modern Spin to the City's Harbour

Adjacent to La Malagueta is Muelle Uno, a modern shopping and gastronomic waterfront development that is popular amongst tourists, especially those coming on cruise ships and have only a few hours to spend in town.

Apart from shopping, you can grab a bite to eat, have a coffee and enjoy a lovely walk by the water.

You can also visit the Pompidou museum of modern art, located in the remarkable building known as The Cube.

Gastronomic Delights

La Malagueta is a paradise for food enthusiasts, especially those who love fish and seafood in general. Here you will find a wider, more upscale, offer amongst the typical chiringuitos (traditional restaurants located at the beach).

Whatever you decide to try, even if it's just a coffee or a cold drink, any of these spots will let you basque in the beauty of the Mediterranean sea, and that is always a great plan.

Cultural Enclaves

Beyond its beach and bullring, La Malagueta is home to cultural gems such as the Malaga Pompidou Centre, a branch of the famous Parisian museum. This contemporary art space, housed in a bold cube-like structure, showcases a rotating collection of modern and contemporary masterpieces.

You can also spot Malaga's Farola (lighthouse), built over 200 years ago and already an established symbol of the city's skyline.

Just a Stone's Throw Away

You will find that Malaga is relatively small and La Malagueta is a great starting point if you wish to visit some other barrios. There are many buses running frequently and a bike lane with panoramic views of the Mediterranean on one side and the mountains on the other.

El Centro Historico or Old Town is settled between the mountains and shores of the Costa del Sol, and it stands as a testament to the city's rich tapestry of history, culture, and vibrant energy.

Pedregalejo, a lovely beachfront neighbourhood that's ideal for some leisure walking, having a drink by the beach or getting there on a bike ride.

El Palo, where we can feel the essence of Malaga's old fishermen tradition and architecture.

No time in Malaga's Centro Historico is complete without visiting La Merced, where you'll find its elegant and spirited Plaza, lovely cafés, el Teatro Cervantes and delicious fresh produce in the traditional market.
